Archangelos Michael Church
Take a virtual walk through the Church of Archangel Michael in Kato Lefkara and discover one of the region's oldest and most historically significant Byzantine churches through immersive 360° panoramic views.
Dating back to the 12th century, this charming country church once served as the seat of the Bishop of Kition and Lefkara during the period of Ottoman rule. At that time, the church complex included small monastic cells where the Bishop resided, making it an important religious centre for the surrounding villages.
Situated on the southern edge of Kato Lefkara, surrounded by peaceful farmland and olive groves, the church was built in the traditional Byzantine architectural style and features a characteristic central dome. Although modest in , it is one of the area's most valuable ecclesiastical monuments.
The exterior is built entirely of local stone, while the interior is richly decorated with beautiful Byzantine wall paintings and icons depicting Saint Veronica, the Baptism of Christ, Saint Neophytos, Saint Nicholas, Archangel Michael, Saint Demetrios, Saint George, and the impressive dome fresco representing The Last Judgement. Unlike many churches, it has no bell tower; instead, a traditional monastery bell (semantron) is still preserved.
The original wooden iconostasis has been carefully restored, while the church's most treasured object remains its centuries-old icon of Archangel Michael, displayed in a special icon stand inside the sanctuary.
Today, the church continues to serve the local community, celebrating Divine Liturgy twice each year—on 8 November, the Feast of Archangel Michael, and on 13 July, commemorating the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. This peaceful historic church offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Lefkara.
